One of the most popular boating party spots, the Jewfish Basin Sandbars are located in the Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge between the Gulf of Mexico and Boca Chica Key. These sandbars sit under the water and run along the channel on both sides. They are a gorgeous place to boat or paddle to. Most days you will see boats gathered, people in lounge chairs, even a dog now and then, playing in the shallow water. On the weekends, you might see people come with grills and cook! You can only get there by boat and our knowledgeable captains will find the perfect spot for you. It’s not just for partiers. It is also a great place for family time, exploring and playing on the water.
The Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1938 as a haven for great white herons, migratory birds, and other wildlife. The refuge consists of thousands of acres of open shallow saltwater, sandbars and mangrove islands, and is known locally as “the backcountry." The refuge provides nesting, feeding, and resting areas for wading birds, shorebirds, raptors and hundreds of other species of birds. Several species of sea turtles (loggerhead, green and hawksbill) forage here and nest on the beaches within the refuge. Florida manatee and Atlantic bottle-nosed dolphin are commonly seen within the shallow waters.
